Our Story

The Port of India was founded in Montreal in 2019 by Corrine Deane, a talented home chef with a vision of sharing the traditional foods and recipes that were passed down to her through generations of home cooks. She has been whipping up delicious Indian-inspired meals for family and friends for over 25 years. In 2019, she decided to transform her passion and love of cooking into a full-time business. 

The Port of India’s founder, Corrine, immigrated to Canada from India in the early 70’s with nine siblings: six brothers, three sisters, and her parents. She decided to delve into entrepreneurship with The Port of India because of her mother, Clotilda Mary Deane (Chloe), a culinary expert and tour de force. Chloe not only grew her own vegetables, she raised buffalos, chickens and ducks, and was quite the businesswoman, too!

As a young child in India, Corrine loved to accompany her mother to the market by horse driven carriage. They would shop for hours under the hot sun, bargaining with the stall owners and choosing the very best produce for their creations.

Corrine still has vivid memories of the vibrant colors and smells. The fruits and vegetables were always diverse, fresh and plentiful. Market days would always end with a freshly-squeezed glass of sugarcane juice, which was such a refreshing treat and a fond memory of growing up in Central India. Corrine was a curious child, always asking questions, observing and learning. She began cooking at a very young age for both friends and family.

In the last 25 years, Corrine has perfected her curry pastes and sauces, using high quality fresh ingredients and spices. Her passion for food and diversifying her palette with different flavors has always been of utmost importance to her. She takes immense pride in every dish she prepares. Cooking is Corrine’s driving force and she continues to innovate in honor of her mother, so that her legacy lives on.

Corrine is a creative and innovative entrepreneur (and mother of five!) with a love for family, friends and delicious food. Her passion is and will always be cooking, primarily Indian cuisine. She’s currently part of the École des entrepreneurs du Québec program to help launch her business to the next level, so that she can successfully share her passion and talent with the Montreal community and beyond.

Justin Riggio | Co-Founder

Justin is Corrine's son and not only shares her love of cooking, but is also determined to contribute towards a more sustainable world. A recent engineering graduate, Justin has a keen interest in sustainable start-ups and is on a mission to help his mother fulfill her dream. He caught the entrepreneur bug, and now wants to put his acquired skills to good use, all with a sustainable perspective in mind.
